Milloin nuoret taistelevat ufoja vastaan ja milloin rakastuvat vampyyreihin - mutta ei Michael Mitchell ja hänen kaverinsa, sillä he eivät lukeudu ´indie nuoriin´. He vain käyvät koulua ja yrittävät selviytyä arjen murheista samalla, kun elämää suurempaan tehtävään valitut ´indie nuoret´ pelastavat maailmaa. Michaelin toive on selvitä hengissä kokeiden ja tanssiaisten kautta valmistujaisiin asti, sillä vaikka hän ei voi vaikuttaa ympärillä oleviin yliluonnollisiin tapahtumiin, joita ´valitut´ ratkovat, niin ne silti vaikuttavat häneen.

And even if there´s no one in my family or my circle of friends who´s going to be the Chose One or the Beacon of Peace or whatever the hell it´s going to be next time around, I reckon there are a lot more people like me than there are indie kids with unusual names and capital-D Destinies. - Me, all I want to do is graduate." Michaelilla on poliitikko äiti, juoppo isä, anoreksiaa sairastanut sisko Mel ja poikabändiä fanittava pikkusisko Meredith. Hänen paras ystävänsä on Jared ja ihastuksensa suomalaiset sukujuuret omaava Henna. Kaikki hahmot on kuvattu elävästi ja moniulotteisesti ja heidän jokapäiväinen iloa ja murhetta sisältävä elämänsä realistisesti. He taistelevat omia sisäisiä demonejaan vastaan ja ovat todellisemman ja aidon elämän selviytyjiä - zombie-peuroja jahtaavat sankarit saavat siirtyä syrjään - vaikka on heilläkin oma paikkansa maailmassa.
   "Not everone has to be the guy who saves the world. Most people just have to live their lives the best they can, doing the things that are great for them, having great friends, trying to make their lives better, loving people properly. All the while knowing that the world makes no sense but trying to find a way to be happy anyway." (s.238)
